WBC and Guidry
by RussThe World Baseball Classic is a joke. As I’ve said before, I don’t want some no-name Latin American player bumping into Derek Jeter and DJ pulling a muscle, or worse, trying to make a name for himself goes for Jeter’s legs attempting to break up a double play. I am totally against it. I understand the pressure that Jeter encounters from the Commissioner on playing in this thing, but as I’m sure Jeter understands this, his first obligation is to the NY Yankees who pay his salary and to the fans that ultimately pay the freight. I’ll be holding my breath….
As for Guidry, he comes very, very close to HOF material. Often overlooked because he’s not a compiler – overall, Guidry has misleading stats. However, he’s like 170 – 100 or something like that, won 20 games 3 times and had probably 5 or 6 top notch seasons. Also, he was the greatest fielding pitcher in the AL of his generation, and was great at holding runners on base. Yankee fans do not need to be reminded that he was great in a big game and Guidry on his best day, or his best season was a better pitcher than some of the guys in the HOF (Sutton comes to mind). Oh, and don’t forget, on some of those Yankee teams, he was the best centerfielder on the roster.
