Andrew Eugene Pettitte was born on June 15, 1972. During the 2007 season, he will turn 35. That’s obviously younger than some of the pitchers the Yankees have acquired on their staff in recent years. There’s no reason to think he will not remain a top flight pitcher in his mid-30’s. Roundtable members are well aware that I believe not giving Pettitte the 4 year, 52 million contract was a huge mistake. He earned that contract. Obviously having Pettitte starting Game 5 in Anaheim in the ALDS last year would have been desirable,- he had a great season. Steinbrenner has shown in the past a willingness to admit mistakes and bring guys back (From Billy Martin, to Yogi Berra, Jim Boughton, David Wells, etc.) It would also generate great feelings among the fans but the bottom line is: Is it a good baseball move?

In my opinion, it would be (depending on what he’s looking for). While I don’t think Houston will be awful, I don’t see them being a pennant contender over the next few years. Give Andy that one last pay day and offer him 3 years, 11-12 million (depending on what kind of 2006 he has).
