Sheffield

I’m not thrilled by any of the options to improve the rotation. Also, given the market and the outrageous contracts that some players are getting, I don’t think the Yankees received enough in return for Sheffield. Sheffield should have yielded at least one young major-league-tested arm (Bonderman?).
The trade looks one sided from this [...]

Mostly #2

That’s how I feel about the rotation! Ha Ha! Seriously, I would feel better with Wang and Zito and Mussina (as the experienced veteran going in a swing game) in a playoff series. Look at the options: Wang and Mussina (last year why would it work in 2007); Wang and Pavano (never [...]

#1 and #2

I agree, this is not a very exciting rotation. To win in the playoffs you need a can’t lose #1 and #2. We have one of them in Wang. None of the others fit the bill. Now how would you feel about Wang and Zito at the top? Or do [...]

The Market

Yes, Pavano was 4 years for $40 million. Gil Meche doesn’t excite me – although I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Meche one day “finding it” and becoming a solid #2 – he came up with that potential. The market is crazy this offseason but the rotation is still problematic.

Igawa

No question they over paid for the talking rights. Interesting that they bid $30M for Dice K and $26 for Igawa. I guess they knew they had no chance on Dice K but submitted a bid just to get the RedSox bid up. Since the $26 does not count against the luxury [...]

Igawa

26 million is way too much for this guy. They haven’t even signed him yet, although I’m sure they will get it done – his agent is Arn Tellem, who has a good relationship with the Yankees. Again, the Yankees have no idea how this guy is going to pitch. Different people [...]

Footnote

I read Mike Celizic’s column online which is a pro-McGwire for the HOF statement. One of the reasons cited by Celizic is that Big Mac will only be joining other Hall of Famers who cheated. Huh? Obviously I had to read on to see which Hall of Famers he was accusing of [...]

Back to the Hot Stove

Ok, done with the HOF tirade. I thought about this last night. With Zito, could the Yankees be waiting until the last moment when another team sets the price, the Yankees look back and say: “Yeah, that fits the salary structure.” And make a last minute bid?

McDonald’s and the HOF

During last summer, I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame. One of the things I noticed was a McDonald’s just outside the Village limits of Cooperstown. I guess it was inevitable that a McDonald’s would find its way to a place where time seems to stand still. And after reviewing the [...]

Is the Manny Era Over?

I both hate Manny and respect Manny’s talent. As much of an ass he is, his bat in the lineup is irreplaceable. This would be a huge offensive loss for the Sox. It will be very interesting to see what kind of year Ortiz has without Manny behind him. My guess [...]
