Good catch Mike G. Russ was bloating Mussina’s numbers. I love a good argument. I don’t disagree that Pettitte is a decent stop gap option considering the market. But, in my humble opinion, I don’t think he outpitched Mussina.
I heard on WFAN that Gil Meche signed for 5 years and $60 Million. [...]

Sorry, the erroneous ERA on Mussina’s 2006 season bothered me a bit. He had a 3.51 ERA last season, not a 4.38. Judging by the rest of numbers, Mussina clearly had the better season last year.
I still think Pettitte is a good move.

Michael also said that “there are things in the works now that will answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems.” All of these teams signing these mediocre pitchers to these big contracts (Meche just got $55 million – I must have missed his CY young season, what in blazes would [...]

Listen, we can analyze this till the cows come home. The simple truth is – there is nothing better out there. Schmidt is gone, Zito is way too expensive. Everyone else that is available is no better than Pettitte. Forget the emotion of Andy being a former Yankee. The Yankees [...]

John raises a valid point – there is a difference between pitching in the NL and the AL. However in 2005, Andy Pettitte distinctly out pitched Mussina. And, Pettitte pitches in a park which is universally acknowledged as a hitter’s park even though his own club is offensively challegned. Here are the [...]

Russ, good points. However, do you really think Pettitte’s numbers in the National League West equate to him outpitching Mussina whom, on top of pitching in the tough AL East, is on the mound of the team that everyone wants to beat?
You know that Pettitte didn’t outpitch Mussina.

Take the name “Andy Pettitte” and all the memories out of this, and I still think it is a worthwhile move. You have a proven big-game, New York-tested pitcher. He’s not too old. I don’t believe he is finished. If he was, he could not have had the second half that [...]

If the direction of the team is to get younger with more power arms and not make the playoffs for a couple of years – I’m ok with that. The trouble is, the organization is not ok with that and I sense many fans are not ok with that. That is why we [...]

Guess what people? Aquiring washed-up Andy Pettitte is not any different from when the Yanks aquired washed-up Randy Johnson and washed-up Kevin Brown.
Yes, yes, yes. Andy was instrumental in a few championships. But that was YEARS ago.
Granted, I realize this is a stop gap solution until next year and that Cashman [...]

You could put Andy Pettitte on the 2007 calendar. It might be a good idea to put him over the month of June, which of course is the month he was born!
Let’s go Cashman! Houston has a one year deal at $12 million. Let’s go to 2 years $26 million. [...]
