Yes, yes and yes.  If Arizona doesn’t “see” the light – the Yanks will deal him to San Diego.  Arizona probably wants the Yankees to eat $4-5 million and the Yanks probably would have to do that if they didn’t have San Diego.  But in the end, Randy is worth at least that in gate receipts to Arizona as they will try to market him as the 300 game winner, and he will probably enter the Hall as a Diamondback (!)

Dust off the “Rocket Man” soundtrack, he’s probably waiting for the call.  Boston is tapped out.  Houston spent their big money on Carlos Lee.  There’s only one spot for Roger assuming he wants to pitch:  New York.  Much to my disappointment, he won’t be able to resist the notion that he is coming in on his “white” rocket to save the Yankees and win one last flag for the Boss.  Of course, this is all contingent on the fact that the price is right.  Which, in this brave new world of Yankee fiscal responsiblity, it will be because Randy’s money will be cleared out.  This is all rounding off of course, but the savings on Mussina and Sheffield equal Pettitte and Igawa.  If the Yanks sign Roger for $10-12 million I’m figuring they keep payroll the same or even lowered it (because you have to figure some salaries will escalate for those back-loaded contracts). If Cashman pulls all of this off, the offseason grade goes to “A” in my book and I’ll remove the moniker “the little runt” at least for now.  He still advocated for retaining the manager, after all.
