HOF
by Mike TWith the 2007 Hall of Fame inductees about to be announced next week, I just want to raise my objection to the Steroid apologists out there who argue that McGwire should be in the Hall because he “saved baseball”, was never proven to have taken steroids, broke an untouchable record etc. These people are also the ones who say Gaylor Perry “doctored the ball” and Ty Cobb was a racist and they are in the Hall so we can’t play morality police now.
My point is too freakin bad. Being a racist did not help Ty Cobb finish his career with the highest batting average (.366) of all time, or help him lead the league in batting 11 times. He was just an awesome player. Â
McGwire was a Home Run threat, no doubt. But his numbers are now suspect especially the 245 homers he hit from 1996 through 1999. Other than HR, McGwires’ numbers are not so impressive. His disappearing act, and overall unwillingness to admit what happened in the past makes him unworthy in my opinion.
Unless of course the HOF decides to open a separate “Better Living Through Chemistry” Steroid Era wing. Then McGwire, Sosa, Palmerio, Bonds and other suspected Steroid users can be in there with there accomplishments “duly noted”. Â
