Mike is absolutely right.  McGWire has no other “thing” boosting his candidacy.  Only HRs.  Jayson Stark says that if you vote “no” on McGwire then be prepared to vote “no” on other players from the steroid era.  OK, Jayson, who do you have in mind?  And don’t give me pitchers – Maddux, Clemens, Glavine, Martinez, Johnson are all guys who have never been under suspicion and in the case of some of those pitchers, their career spans more than the steroid era.  So give me some names.  Sosa?  Ok – I vote “no.”  Palmeiro?  Ok – I vote “no.”  Bonds?  Ok – I vote “no.”  Ripken, is pre-steroid era, Gwynn too.  Rickey Henderson?  He’s before the steroid era.  I mean I could go on, but I don’t want to waste everyone’s time.
