Fellow Yankee fans vehemently disagree with me on this one.  If I had a vote, I would not cast one for Goose Goosage.  Goose was a terrific Yankee to be sure, and should be recongnized and remembered fondly by Yankee fans.  Unfortunately, he falls short of Hall of Fame worthiness in my opinion.

I only characterize 5 seasons from Goose as being truly dominant: 1975; 1977; 1978; 1980 and 1981.  Other years are good: 1982; 1983; and 1984.  1976 was a disaster and then he gets traded to the Pirates.  1979 is injury riddled and Ron Davis was the closer.  5 years of dominance is not enough in my opinion.  We must also look to his post-season numbers.  As Sylvio said to Tony Soprano: “This is where the conversation gets uncomfortable.”

1978 ALCS – This is not good.  2 runs in 4 innings of work.  1978 WS was terrific.

1980 ALCS – This is an unmitigated disaster.  George Brett, nuff said.

1981 ALDS, ALCS and WS – all were terrific.  Reputation restored.

1984 (with Padres)  - Bad, bad and bad.

This is an uneven body of work in the post season. Don’t get me wrong, I love Goose, but without something else, I can’t consider him a Hall of Famer.Â
