Talk about a questionable source, but in Joe Pepitone’s autobio “Joe, You Could Have Made Us Proud” he tells of getting Mantle to once smoke dope before a game. The Mick was zonked at the plate, took three straight strikes, and returned to dugout to threaten Pepitone’s life (and hairpiece?). He also tells of getting a limo to drive him and Mick to a exhibition game at West Point, drinking the whole ride, out of control, and making the driver let them out of the car in the middle of center field. Stengel benched Mick, made Joe play whole game drunk. That is a very old book, Mantle was alive when it came out, don’t know if he ever commented on it. Also recounts Joe’s self-confessed life as a sex addict. Some children’s bedside reading, that book.
