A problem a former Yankee is currently having
by RussDoes anyone know what the heck is the deal with Willie Randolph? Why haven’t the Mets gotten an extension done for Willie? How many indignities must this man suffer in life? First, he get the obligatory interviews form MLB clubs who probably had no intention of hiring him for years and years. Then he gets an insulting offer from the Reds where they offer to pay him slightly more than the concession stand guy. Then, the Mets come calling with their pathetically (at the time) run organization just off of the incredible Art Howe era and they low-ball Willie. The offer was insulting too, but, Willie figures “it’s New York, I’ll take the job, show everyone I can manage, then I’ll earn some respect.” That’s the American way isn’t it? The Mets pay him something like $750,000 which is terrible for managing a New York franchise that drew 3.5 million fans! Torre is going to make over $7 million this year by the way. Ok, so he takes it and then in his second year comes within one game (a tight one at that) from bringing the Mets to the World Series. What gives! Can the Mets be anymore second rate? Give the man a credible extension – 2-3 years at $6-7 million, please!Â

$2 Million a year is too much to pay Randolph. He should be right in the middle of the pack in terms of MLB managers. That would put him at about $1.3 – 1.5 Million.
Agreed. Willie’s success was based largely on 1) a pathetically weak NL East and 2) great acquisitions by Omar. Granted, Willie managed well, but just think about the position players the Mets fielded last year.

For a national league team, that is a team that can rake. Plus the Mets had a good bullpen. I think Willie did a good job, but is it mandatory that he have an extension signed today. His contract is through 2007. Why not see if he can duplicate some of the success before he is rewarded with a long term high value deal.
