Agreed. Willie's success was based largely on 1) a pathetically weak NL East and 2) great acquisitions by Omar. Granted, Willie managed well, but just think about the position players the Mets fielded last year.

1B - Delgado
2B - Valentin
SS - Reyes
3B - Wright
LF/RF Chavez/Floyd/Nady/Greene/Milledge
CF - Beltran
C - LoDuca

For a national league team, that is a team that can rake. Plus the Mets had a good bullpen. I think Willie did a good job, but is it mandatory that he have an extension signed today. His contract is through 2007. Why not see if he can duplicate some of the success before he is rewarded with a long term high value deal.

$2 Million a year is too much to pay Randolph. He should be right in the middle of the pack in terms of MLB managers. That would put him at about $1.3 - 1.5 Million.
