Bernie Williams
by RussWe won’t do career retrospectives now, there will be plenty of time to do that. But the current problem is caused by Doug Mientkewicz. Essentially with his signing the Yankees are carrying 3 first basemen (Giambi, Phillips, Doug M.). That’s ridiculus! And at the time I said it was a waste. I don’t know how much more he brings to the table than Andy Phillips. I am also not a big proponent of carrying 12 pitchers. If you are carrying 12 pitchers, that usually means something’s wrong. I think Cashman is waiting until the roster picture becomes a little clearer. I think after all is said and done, Bernie will be on this roster, he’s a non-roster invitee to spring training and I’m sure Torre will give him every benefit of the doubt. I’m just not confident Doug M. adds anything. He’s got to hit a little – something he’s been unable to do. I’ve seen enough of Phillips to be able to say that he’s a better hitter than him at this point in their careers. Spring training will actually be interesting this year. We will pay careful attention to Phillip Hughes. Careful attention to Igawa, and watching the first base situation to see how it shakes out for Bernie. There’s always the bullpen to keep an eye on too. A very interesting spring.
