Willie R.
by RussIt’s going to cost them. If I was advising Willie, I’d tell him to tell Omar and the Wilpons to take their extension and ”stick it. I gave you a discount because I had no managerial experience, but now I want market value.” Manage the final year of 2007 and see where the chips fall. Plan A will hopefully include another good year by the team (point well taken about the roster) and we’ll see what other jobs open up.  By that time, the Dodger job could open up, Baltimore could be available with a new owner, both better jobs than the Mets - plan B could theoretically include the Yankees job which opens up (I know Mattingly has got the inside track), the Yankees could say: “Mattingly has the inside track but we want to discuss things with other candidates.” Willie could come in and sit down with Cashman and then Omar and Wilpons have to deal with the bad publicity of potentially another ex-Met manager going over to the Yankees. Let Omar, Fred and Jeff Wilpon answer those questions and sweat it out. Willie will be in a good position especially if he wins back to back divisions. Who was the last Mets manager to do that? Answer: It’s never been done before in the history of their franchise. So, pay $2 million now (which includes the premium of managing in NY because of all of the media you have to deal with), or pay more later, that would be my attitude.
