The Red Sox are the new Yankees
by RussAt first I was concerned when I heard this rumor – and now not so much. Helton is a very fine player. However, a couple of things to be concerned about if I were living in Red Sox Nation. 1) Helton turns 34 this year and in recent years has had injury issues (back, stomach ailment); 2) He makes a lot of $$$$; 3) Although I think he’s still a good player, you know those stats will take a hit playing away from Coors Field; 4) If Mike Lowell goes in the deal – who plays third? Youkilis? Do you want Helton to play first everyday? Where does that leave Willy Mo Pena? Does Manny DH? The one thing about Lowell was he was a dependable glove; and 5) of course the idea of giving young talent away for aging veterans who cost big bucks.Â
I personally believe that Willy Mo Pena is the sort of player who needs to play everyday. If he plays inconsistently, then I believe his effectiveness is diminished. Of course it’s not going to matter if Dice Mat or whatever his name is, turns out to be a complete bust. Â
If they do get Helton, where does that leave their payroll? Does anyone know?Â
