by RussThe evolution of this non-contractual, informal position demands, for better or worse, fairly or unfairly, leadership for the clubhouse. If for no other reason than the organization says so – the organization attached that label to Jeter.  There is a meaning to it – the organization has wrapped its arms around this individual and is saying ”this is the guy, he’s the leader.” Nowadays, there is perhaps greater meaning attached to this role only because of the historical signifcance for the New York Yankees. How could it not?  This is the title of Lou Gehrig. This was the designation given to Thurman Munson.  There are benefits and responsibilities associated with this title. You want the benefits, assume the responsibilities.  Â
