Spring Training Stories # 10, 11 and 12
by Mike T#10. Johnny Damon is Fat! Damon arrived at camp and “found out the pants are a little tight.” Damon reported to camp at 217 pounds approximately 5 pounds heavier than his “reporting weight”. Damon explained that he might want to go as low as 210 to take some stress off his legs. The media guide lists Damon at 205 pounds.
#11. Believe the hype on Philip Hughes. Hughes faced Raul Chavez, Hideki Matsui, Todd Pratt, Jason Giambi in live batting practice yesterday. Only two balls were hit fair. Giambi compared him to Rocket. Pratt compared him to Schilling and Bret Myers.  Hughes’ arsenal includes two-plus fastballs, a curveball that catcher Ben Davis called “devastating,” a developing change-up, a slider in mothballs that is slowly seeing daylight, and a deceiving delivery.
#12. Yankees Playing Cat and Mouse.  The Boss has been sighted at Legend’s Field.  But the media can’t get close. Yankees have a mis-direction strategy involving decoy golf carts, security gaurds and “closed” hallways to keep George out of the eyes of the media horde.
Sidebar:Â After hitting against Pettitte during BPÂ on the main field, Alex Rodriguez went to Field 2 for extra swings that produced colossal homers. One ball landed on Dale Mabry, the street well beyond the pond that is behind the left-field fence. NICE A-Rod.
