Heavy Legs

Pavano- heavy legs.
Hank Bauer- purple heart leg injury from World War II combat.
I’m was trying to think of an additional comment, but none are necessary.

Pavan-uh-o

Klapisch writes for ESPN that “Just three days into camp, Pavano had to be excused from PFPs (pitchers’ fielding practice) because of heavy legs. Even though he participated in his regularly scheduled bullpen session the next day, the fact that Pavano experienced problems so quickly undermined the success of the winter’s rehab.”
Is Ragu Ready?

Sheffield’s comments

Gary Sheffield has criticized Joe Torre for not playing him in game three of the playoffs. Then he says that he wasn’t ready to play because of his wrist. The worse part is that Joe acquiesced and played Sheff when he shouldn’t have, and that cost the Yankees in 2006.
I am glad Sheff [...]

Yankees Related Spring Training Summary So Far…

1. Hank Bauer dies a few days before pitchers and catchers report.
2. Mariano wants to get Paid.  Yankees will get no preferrential treatment when it comes to free agency. Cashman says that’s OK we can outbid anyone if we have to.
3. Mussina calls out Pavano as not quite ready for Prime Time. Torre says Pavano has a “sizeable” amount [...]

More signs of the Big Year

A “Big Year” is even more clear to me now that spring training is underway. Why?
1. Less is more when it comes to storylines, so it’s good that some are coming to an end (Did the 1998 team have any storyline at all? Even a positive one?):
-Bernie’s time is up. The Yankees don’t need another farewell tour [...]

Sleepovers

That is well-done satire.
It is funny in a non-ha-ha sense when Barry Zito is kissing Bonds’ steroid enhanced glutes for the media already, as per today’s Times. Zito is often described as a free spirit, I think you can substitute airhead for that.
Well, at least Zito is getting paid more than the Hulk this year, he [...]

Sleepovers

This is hilarious. Read here.

Schmaptin, this!

The evolution of this non-contractual, informal position demands, for better or worse, fairly or unfairly, leadership for the clubhouse.  If for no other reason than the organization says so – the organization attached that label to Jeter.  There is a meaning to it – the organization has wrapped its arms around this individual and is saying ”this [...]

Schmaptin this!

I have to disagree.  Sure, Captain is not a contractual position, but it does carry weight in the clubhouse.  The guy who earnes the title is supposed to be the team leader.  He is the “go to” guy when there are issues. He’s the guy that should step in to take care of small problems [...]

Captain, Schmaptin

Captain is a high rank in the Navy, and in sports, it has some significance only in pro hockey, for traditional reasons. In baseball, for the Yankees, and in modern MLB rosters with so many multi-millionaires with guaranteed contracts, I don’t think the captain or any self-anointed player-leader means much. Does it say in Jeter’s [...]
