Cup ‘o Joe (On the John)

If I had my own recurring post, I’d probably title it “On the John.”
The start of the season is less than a week away. The Yankee staff are packing up gloves, bats, helmets, balls, and protective equipment. The players are getting their personal effects in order for shipping to their homes or The Bronx. [...]

Trivia….

Tim Kijuikian (or however you spell it) wrote an article on ESPN about baseball numbers and how we all remember them more than numbers in other sports.  He ended the article mentioning a trivia question someone asked him and then didn’t bother giving the answer.  It forced me to try my own luck and research [...]

DEFCON, Keeping the Ferrari in the Garage

I like the idea of basing the name on the Yankees or Steinbrenner.  My personal vote would be for STEINCON.  I think it would be a good way to represent how the boss, “Big Stein,” was.  We would be reflecting Steinbrenner’s condition (not health-wise, but anger-wise) as events progress.  “STEINCON 3″ could be something like [...]

Defcon 2 status

The U.S. went to Defcon 2 status during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.
With regard to the Yankees an early test of their mettle builds character.

DEFCON/NYYCON/ETC.

When my brother-in-law was a young Air Force officer in the 80’s, he was a missile control capsule officer for Minuteman launch silos. I’ll have to get him to log on to see this creative insanity – he will bust a gut.

NYYCON and BUSTCON

Maybe a combination of the two.  NYYCON to siginify the state of the team and BUSTCON to determine the state of the season.  For example, obviously a season in which the Yanks dont win the WS is always considered a BUST, but getting to the WS and losing would be BUSTCON 3, whereas finishing 3rd [...]

NYYCON

Here’s how I would set the NYYCON meter:

NYYCON 5 – Relative peace. Yanks hold comfortable 10 game division lead. No key players on DL.
NYYCON 4 – Normal conditions.  Yanks lead division less than 10 games or are tied or within 4 of division lead pre-Trade Deadline. 1-2 key players on DL (pre-trade Deadline)
NYYCON 3 – Increased readiness. Yanks lead division [...]

BUSTCON

I think it should be “BUSTCON”, signifying the threat of the season being a “Bust.”
For better or worse, Phil Hughes will be in the rotation prior to Memorial Day. I agree that “BUSTCON 4″ is the appropriate threat level.

DEFCON alert

You’re right, in my haste, I misspoke (or mistyped).  I meant DEFCON 4.  Not DEFCON 2.  Mike has correctly pointed out the readiness level goes from “5″ being normal peacetime readiness to “1″ which is a state of emergency or war. I apologize, I’m not as crazy as that.  Maybe it should be GEOCON (stands [...]

Reality Check

DEFCON 2 ??  Even before the season starts.  Russ, you need to take your meds.  I don’t think you can go to DEFCON 2 during spring training.   The U.S. has never gone to DEFCON 2!
Given that the opponents the first week are Tampa Bay and Baltimore.  I would put set the DEFCON at 4 (Normal [...]
