Someone Please Commit TORRE!

Seriously, I mean it. How many times to we have to watch a game like last night where Torre’s complete and utter mismanagement of this team robs them of a chance for an EASY WIN. Yes, I said it, last night had the chance to be an easy win. But Joe, in his insanity, messed it up. Let us count the ways:
1. Top of the 8th. A-Rod on second Giambi bloops a single that beats the shift. A-Rod scores on a great read of the ball. 6-2 Yankees. Torre pinch runs for Giambi. WHY? You ask. I don’t know. You have a 4 run lead. You don’t need to have speed in that situation, especially since you already lost Posada because of the thumb injury. Did Torrey really expect that Will Nieves was going to get a hit there and advance the runner? PLUS you loose Giambi’s bat if you need it later. (this cost him once already this year he should have known better.)  Â
2. Bottom of the 8th.  I can’t completely fault Torre for bringing in Meyers to face Papi to lead off the bottom of the 8th. That’s what Meyers is there for. However, with a 4 run lead, he could have left Proctor in (who was pounding the strike zone). Proctor’s numbers against Papi and Manny are not that good, so I guess I understand it to some extent. So let’s just say the move was marginal.
3. After Meyers gives up the double to Papi, Joe Brings in Vizcaino. What exactly did Jose show Torre on Thursday when he gave up 4 runs in the 7th against Cleveland? Did Torre like how he walked the first batter he faced and thought, hey, that would be a great thing here if he walked Manny to put 2 on and nobody out? Was it the Double and Home run he subsequently gave up that made him think, Yeah, this is my guy? Seriously, why was Vizcaino in the game?  Â
4. Rivera in the 8th? I thought he was going to be a one inning pitcher this year Joe? What the F?  As soon as they showed him warming, it reeked of desperation.  What happens? Well we all know what happens, the Sox comeback, the fans are juiced (instead of demoralizingly silenced by A-Rod’s brilliant game) and the Yankees have to throw two rookies out there on Saturday and Sunday. Nice.
5. Two outs in the 9th. Torre lets Kevin Thompson bat for HIMSELF. Because of the bonehead move in the 8th, Torre doesn’t have Giambi’s bat. With Abreu on 1st as the tying run, maybe it would be smart to pinch hit Phelps in that situation. A home-run wins the game. There’s that big freakin wall in right. Nope. It’s Kevin Thompson all by himself, with Phelps in the on-deck circle. (no mention of who was going to catch the bottom of the ninth if Phelps actually hit for Nieves had he actually gotten up.). Â
Thanks Joe. We love ya!
