Clutch Ruling
by Mike GI need some input on an amendment to the clutch rules (the idea brought about by a situation in last night’s game). Derek Jeter’s RBI Triple in the 7th to increase the lead to three seems like it would fit the clutch criteria and warrant a +1, but according to the current guidelines, it does not. Jeter was up in the seventh with a man on, Yankees ahead by two (clutch-meter on), but since Abreu was on first (not in scoring position) the current guidelines do not prescribe a +1.
I suggest that a Positive guideline be added:
RBI within general criteria (+1)
This seems like an original oversight that would not come up very often.
I also suggest adding another Positive guideline that was discussed earlier, but was dropped and a decision was never made:
Regardless of score, Hit to bring Yankees within one run (+1)
This catches the following missed ABs:
- Bases-loaded bases-clearing hit, down 4
- 3-Run HR, down 4
- Grand-slam, down 5
I would also like to amend the existing “RBI to tie game (+2)” rule to include “Regardless of score.” This would catch the now missed “grand slam, down 4.”
I know this sounds like a lot, but in reality the changes are slight and, I think, warranted. I do not believe the changes will damage the integrity of the Clutch Count as the situations have barely risen. If instituted, I will adjust Giambi’s count +1 for his April 3-run HR to bring Yanks within 1.
Please let me know if you approve.

Looks ok to me.
I had always assumed we were counting those types of hits as +1. (i.e. you couldn’t get a +1 for getting a hit with a guy on 1st that didn’t end up leading to an RBI, but you couldn’t get a -1 in that situation either). My general understanding would be any time you drive in a run in the close game it is a +1.
Mike, I agree, but it was never spelled out in the criteria. I’m just suggesting that it be a documented way of getting a +1.
