$150M for 6 years won’t cut it. Boras wants $30M per year for A-Rod, and he will get it from the Angels. Give him $180 for 6 years on the extension, and he can’t turn it down. It’s still worth it.

My theory on the A-Rod contract extension was voiced in public at the June 10 game againts Pittsburgh, a game in which A-Rod smacked two home runs. Russ and I were talking numbers, and we sketched out on the back of the newspaper the approximate year when A-Rod would challenge Aaron and (soon to be [...]

Yes, yes and yes. Mike and I scratched out the A-Rod contract at the Stadium a couple of weeks ago on the back of my scoresheet. Joe is right. Michael Kay is wrong (he probably does not read the Roundtable). Kay was saying on his show that it’s “90%” certain that A-Rod is not back [...]

and I give credit to Mike T. for spouting this a week ago, is give A-Rod a 5 year extension for $30M per year, on top of the 3 years left, plus a $15M extension bonus. This keeps him on the Yankees for 8 years, which gives him a shot at breaking the HR record [...]

Remember, Sheffield has been on 7 different teams in his carreer. You need “Angry Sheff” on your team if you want him to really perform. He has to prove something to the team that let him go, or didn’t sign him, or traded him. Yes he has been very consistent since 1999, but overall his [...]

I would rather lose than have Sheffield on the team.
Win or lose there will be big changes in the off season with this team and I hope they start with the manager.  Given the big payroll over the past seven years since they won the WS the team’s performance over this period has been very disappointing. Time [...]

The bad seasons turned in by Giambi, Abreu, Damon, Matusi and to a lesser extent Cano make the absence of Sheffield all the more obvious. If even 2 of the above players were having standard years, Sheffield’s absence easier to tolerate. I don’t regret it one bit. Â
Heck, if we had a Roundtable back then, [...]

Good points Joe and Mike G.
There are many downstream impacts of being rid of Sheffield. Mike G’s point about A-Rod may very well be true. But from a pure numbers perspective…Wow.
Also, whether Sheff is a good situational hitter or not (for which most of the time he wasn’t), he is at least feared by opposing pitchers [...]

No regrets here. I’m glad that malcontent is gone. If Abreu was putting up “Abreu numbers,” there wouldn’t be much of a difference. Do you remember how bad of a situational player he was? I only remember a 1-2 week span of his Yankee career where he was a difference maker. I would have rid [...]

And Abreu is no better than Sheff in right field.
