If…
by JoeIf the Yankees make it past the Indians, Torre’s got to get the message that he must put the fate of the Yankees in the hands of the kids. Hughes should be the third starter and Ian Kennedy if healthy – #4. Keep Mussina as long relief. I know Kennedy hasn’t done anything yet, but I have a hunch the team will play better behind a guy who can throw strikes. We found out last night that Jaba gets tired. But he was devastating in the 7th. So used properly, he’s a formidable weapon.
As for the offense, except for Damon, I still didn’t see much last night. I agree with Russ, Matsui’s 2 hits were lucky. Jeter has hurt the team more than anyone – even Clemens. Come Jeter, man-up. El Capitan! Giambi should be on the bench. He’s done. I don’t think he should even pinch hit. We need 10+ runs tonight. That means Jeter, Arod, Posada, Abreu have to show up big time.
Tonight, the whole season rests on Wang’s shoulders. We need 6 strong innings. I don’t have a lot of confidence that Mussina can do what Hughes did last night. One inning, maybe, but not 3+. Also, unless the Yankees are up by 4+ runs, I think we’ll see Pettitte tonight.
Alright, I’ll stop rambling. Last thing, I don’t think George’s comments have any real affect on player’s efforts or how Torre manages. But it’s been a long time since we have heard a “loose cannon” remark out of the owner. I actually miss him.
