The 2008 Yankees
by RussReading that made me chuckle. Putting aside the coaching staff for a moment…..come on!
I believe the Yankees have decided now that they have suffered a PR disaster with Torre (I’m not saying it was the wrong move – just the pundits all love Torre and are sympathizing with him) that they will make every effort to give the next manager every player and spare no expense to minimize the likelihood of failure. They will give that manager a playoff caliber team. That means – making killer offers to A-Rod prior to opting out with a convincing presentation that if the Yankees are not involved the market will bottom out; Giving Posada and Mariano each, $40 million for 3 years or something close to it, quite possibly more (and if they signed them last year probably could have saved close to $20 million).  And, investigating every avenue for a starting pitcher. Maybe Santana, maybe Jake Peavey, maybe someone I haven’t thought of yet… definitely not Clemens – that ship has sailed. Yeah, getting rid of Torre is going to prove costly in a sense, this payroll is going to be $250 million. But historically speaking, George would rather put the money in the players and not the manager. And yeah, it makes no sense when you spend $250 million to pinch pennies here and there with the manager. But that’s the way it’s always been. Sign Carl Pavano – fire the elevator operator at Legends Field because that’s a luxury.  For as long as I’ve been a fan – that’s the way it’s been.    Â
