Actually….it is Paul O’Neill that wants the job. That’s not to say the Yanks don’t want him, but O’Neill went out of his way to say he would love the opportunity to be on Girardi’s staff.

There’s no way he becomes a coach.  The YES Network couldn’t even get him to agree to broadcast more games.  Do you think he’s going to want to travel to every game with the team?  He stays in the booth for the “important” games.

Joe is right, Michael Kay and O’Neill is a fun pairing. Did you notice how testy the Al Leiter/Kay combo was getting at the end of the year? Those guys may go Rosie O’Donnell/Donald Trump if they work together again. Kay is the chubbier of the two, he gets to be Rosie.

I heard the same report (speculation) about Girardi bringing Paulie in. Personally, I like O’Neil in the booth, so I’d rather see him there, than on the field.  He’s like Rizzutto in the booth.  He’ll say anything.

Now that third base is “vacant” consider this. A-Rod’s regular season HR’s and RBI’s are gone. One player can’t replace those numbers. So we have to improve in pitching, which with the young arms tried out at the end of the season seems plausible.

The issue is choice when it comes to making a major move for the 2008 Roster:
Johan Santana or Miguel Cabrera? The Yanks can’t have both because the same parts would be traded for either player. Letting go of a young starter might be more palatable when you’re getting the best pitcher in baseball in return.
