I just read an article by Jeff Passan on Yahoo Sports while trying to imagine a warm, sunny day.

He writes that the World Series is “insalvageable.” Mostly due to, in part, Baseball’s long term deal with Fox because Fox insists on later start times. He also was critical of Selig’s decision to “suspend” or “waive” the official game rule.

I say, the only mistake Selig made was arguably starting the game to begin with.

However, no player or fan wants to watch the World Series end with an umpire calling the game and subsequently having it called “official” in an elimination game situation. Ok, let’s give the Phillies the championship at midnight once the game is deemed “official” and cannot be resumed. If you are to believe Selig, he said he discussed it with both clubs prior to the game based on the potential for elimination (the right thing to do) and both clubs agreed to the possibility of suspending the rule if confronted with the situation. In a 162 game schedule, the rule makes sense, in the context of a best of seven series for the championship…. not so much.

We can get technical about the rules, but look no further than to the Commissioner’s “best interest” authority and you can then agree that Selig did the right thing.

If the radar showed that the weather was going to be problematic, they probably should never have started that game. But I don’t think it’s fair to criticize Selig for the weather…. even if the game’s first pitch was scheduled earlier in some theoretical future, what guarantee is there that the weather won’t affect it? No, no, no, once you come to the realization that the weather affects Baseball and doesn’t impact the other sports I think you get more comfortable with these outcomes. No one likes the weather affecting a game, especially a World Series game, but that’s the unfortunate reality of this game – especially in an era when teams are careful of having their players get hurt.

So, I say…. either accept these realities about the game——- or tune out…and watch something else.
