Mike has some plausible scenarios – the only problem is, they can’t all happen! I would think one or two of those moves can happen but all of them?

Here’s the issue:

If I can get Peavy, I’d rather have the pitcher. But if I can’t get Peavy, acquiring Matt Holliday is ok too. If I get Holliday (no Peavy) then I have to hope Wang comes back to form to make the top three Sabathia, Joba, Wang. I would like to acquire Holliday without giving up Hughes (which we should be able to do – if you ship Cano, Kennedy, Melky together – and remind Colorado you just relieved them of a $15 million per year obligation which is at least what he’d get on the open market).

I like how we all assume Sabathia is on our team for next year. In terms of management – Cashman should only be involved in the beginning and at the end of the deal (to give Sabathia the idea that he’s top priority) and delegate it to Jean Afterman (sp?). Cashman should then be working out the trades. As we have spelled out here on YR of course.
