I agree with Russ that the Marte signing is a bit troubling.  Yes its nice to have a so called dominant lefty in the pen.  However, I was not completely sold on his effectiveness (I felt he wilted in the more pressure packed scenarios) AND if he left via free agency, the Yankees would have recieved 2 draft picks for him.  As nomaas.org has mentioned, its not often you get 2 draft pick compensation for someone who pitches only 60 innings.  If they were going to retain him (and spend $12M to do so) why not pick up the $6M option for 2009 and see where he is at the end of next year.  Signing older relievers into their mid-to-late 30s is not the way to build a bullpen.   This smells of the failed Chris Hammond experiment in 2003 (albeit for far less coin).
