Ok, a solid first move
by RussI won’t take credit for Swisher. Someone else had mentioned it before me. But, as a “stop gap” move, this one is good. Giving up Jeff Marquez, Wilson Betemit and whoever else is acceptable.Â
Swisher is a useful player – a quick review of his stats reveals that he strikes out too much, but I note in 2007 he did walk 100 times. He can steal some bags too. He has some power and can play a reliable CF. Is he exactly what we need? Like they say in Hertz: “Not exactly.” But, I think he can lock it down until Austin Jackson comes along. AND, as was mentioned, the best part about the deal is if Cashman can acquire a LEGIT centerfielder, Swisher can move to first base. So, I like this move because of the flexibility – Cashman can go get a CF and move Swisher to 1B —- OR —– shell out the sheckles and pay Texeria and play Swisher in CF. It’s the kind of roster flexibility we’ve been lacking in recent years.  Â
Yeah, reading between the lines… it does a couple of things. It communicates to Texeria that the Yankees are not “breaking the bank” for him. And, it give the middle finger to the Pirates, who may have been asking too much for Nate McLouth.Â
I support the move.  Good job, Cash.  You’ve got your instructions —- go get ‘em!
