John B’s Dumb Ideas
by John BIf they don’t sign Manny or Teixeira, there are other options: Adam Dunn, while certainly not as balanced a player as Teixeira, would certainly strike fear into pitchers with his long-ball potential. He strikes out a ton though (164 times in ‘08). But he’s a guy that could be signed to a reasonable two year deal.
Why not trade for Andruw Jones? He signed a 2 year deal with the Dodgers, 2009 being the last year, and he will make $15 Million. The Dodgers have a crowded outfield and if they want to eat a large portion of that salary, I’ll let Jones patrol center field for a year as a stop gap. Can Jones resurrect his career? Who knows, but it would only be for one year and you might catch lightning in a bottle. Or, he may be horrible again and would need to be released or asked to wash glasses at the Martini Bar.
Jim Edmonds? Cheap as hell, old as dirt. But, he could split time in CF with Gardner/Melky. He hit 20 HRs and drove in 55 runs in only 340 at bats last year with the Cubs. Not too shabby. Bobby Abreu hit 20 home runs and drove in 100 runs – in 609 at bats.
