More than $80 mill was coming off the books this year so the Yankees were going to have the money to spend. I think they are still under budget despite what I said in last night's post. They still have only spent about $68 - 70 million of the 80 coming off so the payroll for next season has a chance to actually be lower than it was in 2008. But, here's the real deal: As a season ticket purchaser, I don't believe that if the Yankees did not spend the money, ticket prices would somehow go down. Never going to happen. So I'm glad the Yankees take that money and put it into a competitive product on the field. The bigger crime would be if the Yankees charged outrageous prices and put the money in their pockets. At least I get to look forward to the team competing for a division title and a chance to go to the playoffs every year.
