I think it was Javy Vazquez….that young lefty Halsey…and All-Star catcher for The Rays…Navarro…and I think someone else too…can’t recall…

That one worked out great, didn’t it.
There was no extra player, but there was cash involved. In addition to those players, the Yankees actually sent money TO the D-Backs that reduced Vasquez’s salary. I think it broke down to $2 or $3M per year on the remainder of Vasquez contract (which at that point was 3 more years).
The lineage on the Randy deal is interesting….
1. Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera and Randy Choate (all drafted or signed as amatuers by the Yankees) traded for Javier Vazquez in Dec 2003
2. Vazquez gets a 4 year $45 M deal ($8.5 in 04, $10.5 in 05, $11.5 in 06 and $12.5 in 07). Vazquez flops in 2004 ALCS (mostly because of Kevin Brown mess) and is railroaded out of town.
3. Vazquez, Brad Halsey, Dioneer Navarro and $9M go to Arizona for Randy Johnson. in December 2004
4. Yankees give Johnson 2 year extension on top of 1 year remaining on contract. Randy pitches ok but not dominant.
5. Cashman trades Johnson (and $2m) in 2006 offseason for Luis Vizcaino, Ross Ohlendorf, Steven Jackson and Alberto Gonzalez. Vizcaino proves a reliable reliever others no stars so far.
6. Cashman trades Ohlendorf, Karstens McCutchen and Jose Tabata for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte. Ok so Ohlendorf wasnt the big ticket here but he was part of the tree.
