The Yankee Years.
by Mike TListen here. I don’t care if the book is written in the 3rd person. The book is “co-authored” by Joe Torre, meaning all of the book is attributable to him, unless he makes specific representations that certain chapters are written by him. I agree that this permanently divorces him from the Yankees until the Steinbrenner family no longer owns the team. It also tarnishes his reputation with the fans. Also, how many times did Joe preach the position of “what happens in the clubhouse – Stays in the clubhouse.” As for some of the alleged statements in the book….
- A-Rod called A-Fraud. Perfect example of why Torre should have been out a long time ago. Torre perpetuated the A-Fraud type comments by moving A-Rod down in the order in that playoff game against Detroit. Just awful to treat him like that.
- A-Rod’s “Single White Female” obession with Jeter. Uh. Torre. You were the one with the Jeter obsession. He was part of your “Championship Circle of Trust” and you treated him like he could do no wrong. Even though he has been slipping defensively, you always protected him. Not so with A-Rod who you chastised for his brilliant “Ha!” play against Toronto. Instead of saying what great baseball smarts, you said he shouldn’t have done it. Screw you Joe!
- Cashman didn’t have his back in 2007. Joe you shouldn’t have had a Job after 2004! Yet Cashman repeatedly stood up for you both with the Steinbrenners and in the Press. The fact that they had to create the “Joba rules” to protect Joba from you, says all there is to say about your ability to nurture bullpen arms. Ask Paul Quantrill, Mike Stanton, Scott Proctor, and Tanyon Sturtze about your bullpen acumen.Â
- The insulting one-year deal that still would have made him the highest paid manager in the league. Joe was on borrowed time since 2004, but you were still made an offer. You were not fired. And it was not insulting.Â

My sentiments exactly! I could not have written it better Mike … it’s perfect!
I hope he is never invited to set foot in Yankee Stadium (at some point we stop calling it “the new” Yankee Stadium, right).
I suppose some day he will make it to the HOF … perhaps he should enter in a Dodger uniform!!! He doesn’t deserve to put on even a Yankee cap … never mind uniform. If there was ever a chance #6 would be retired for him … I hope that’s not even the slightest consideration anymore. Had it ever happened, I would have pretended it was for Clete Boyer!
It must have really ticked him off that Alex won the MVP in 95 and 97 and his little prince has yet to do so. That is correct, isn’t it? World Series MVP – yes; but never AL Season MVP – right?
That’s right. Jeter has never won an MVP. Although he was robbed of one in 2006 when Justin Morneau won the MVP even though he was not the MVP on his own team (Joe Mauer was in my opinion).
Jeter’s line in 2006:
154 games – 118 R, 214 Hits, 39 2B, 14 HR, 97 RBI, 34 SB, .343 BA, .417 OBP, .483 SLG, .900 OPS.
Let’s not go overbaord here now either…
Torre was one of the greatest managers in Yankee history. 12 seasons, 12 playoff appearances, etc. blah blah…you all know his record…
I can’t say I never want him to come to the Stadium again. I do think he should enter the HOF as a Yankee. He did a lot of good for this organization.
This book seems to be a bad decision…BUT….none of us have read it yet!
Let’s not go overboard. He criticized A-Rod and Cashman…two guys that many people in the Yankee organization may not like anyway. So what? Yeah yeah…what happens in Vegas.
But let’s not crucify the guy.
