Torre’s book
by RussI’m with everyone else… why on Earth is he writing a book now? We tend to expect these “tell all” books after the fact, but he’s still managing. It makes no sense. This is very un-Torre-like. We all view Torre a little differently now and that’s not a good thing. I wonder what this does to the situation of retiring his number? Joe Torre Day? It’s kind of difficult to imagine those things on a day like today.Â
Why can’t everyone just acknowledge that the Torre-Yankees relationship was one that worked very well. Torre did a good job managing here with the players, the press, and an active Steinbrenner. But, also, we must remember that Steinbrenner was the one who gave Joe the opportunity too. Joe wasn’t regarded too well as a manager before he took the Yankee job, but Bob Watson and Gene Michael saw something there…. and George tooka chance. It all worked beautifully for a time. Torre and Zimmer worked very well together. Unfortunately, it all unraveled, but that happens – it’s ok. I guess I’m not one for recriminations. I understand there’s an economic incentive to write the book but as was mentioned – Torre is already a mult-millionaire. Remeber - he’s already written a couple of books (Chasing the Dream – My Life’s Journey to the World Series and some book on Management, I think). I’m sure he used to pull in a good buck for speaking engagements too. It doesn’t make much sense to me.
