Not that it matters that much (because the Yankees have at least 7 above average hitters in the lineup), but Beyond The Boxscore has an interesting article detailing the optimal lineup for the Yankees (and Twins and Mets). The basic theory of lineups, according to them is….
Take the top three hitters and put them in the #1, [...]

I guess Mike T – finally got to Girardi. He was on about this a while ago because of the on base percentage. I see what Joe is trying to do, he’s also going to use Brett as his 9 hitter and he wants it left right left. Jeter can do it, we know he [...]

The only place for Jeter is left field. However, I’m not prepared to make that judgment at this point in time. While it is true that Jeter had a below average defensive year last season, he is a prideful player and I have to see how he does this year. I have to believe that [...]

A-rod got flak for suggesting (indirectly) that the Yanks could use a lead-off hitter other than Damon. With Girardi’s experiment with Jeter he may get his wish. If Jeter is aging as a player batting first will demonstrate it pretty quickly. Is he your speedy, base stealing prototypical lead-off hitter at this point in his [...]

Now I see where you were going with that Joe. Well…I hope you’re not right. It seems to me that Jeter is a big-picture thinker. For all the maturity he’s displayed in responding to the many controversies, I’d like to think he can channel that same unselfish, adult mindset when it comes to this matter.

Of course your reasoning is exactly correct. However, I don’t think that Jeter is emotionally prepared to admit that he can’t play short anymore. I think it will take him 3 years to get to that point. And I believe the Yankees will wait until HE makes the decision.

I don’t agree. I don’t think there is any way he plays short for the next three years. At the very, very, very most he could play there next year – but I believe that even that is doubtful and overly optimistic.Â
In my opinion, you want Jeter to make a move at the youngest age [...]

Assuming he signs with the Yankees again (just about guaranteed), Jeter will be playing Short for at least 3 more years. Then we can debate where he will play. Everybody is talking about his lack of range and throwing errors (me included), but I don’t think his defensive deficiencies will prevent the Yankees from making [...]

2009 may be Jeter’s swan song at the shortstop position. So, what are the Yankees’ options in so far as moving Jeter to a new position? I noodle a few here:
DH: Jeter doesn’t have the prototypical offensive profile of a designated hitter. However, Jeter is still a capable hitter – especially in key situations. But with Jorge [...]

Johnny Blanchard. The elders in the Table will remember him from their youth very fondly. Quite an asset, would have had more playing time elsewhere but when you are on teams like the 1961 Yankees – in those days you were happy just to have a roster spot and be a spear carrier to the greats. [...]
