I’ll take a stab at it. Roger Maris.
I almost said Winfield but I’ll stick with Maris.
I’ll say A-Rod
Answer: Jason Giambi in 2002 with 41 HR
After I submitted Maris’ name, I went and looked up Winfield. He actually hit 37 in his second year. How quickly we forget Giambi. Nice.
My guess would have been Tino Martinez or Giambi. I recalled Tino had a good year in 96, but then I remembered Torre saying something about the team in 96 had no one with HR in the 30s. I also remember Giambi winning the HR derby in his first year with the Yankees, which suggested that he had a lot at the break.
