The goal is to keep Hanley Ramirez away from Boston. Any way the Yanks can help to accomplish that, will help them for the next 10 years.

Why would the Yankees do such a trade?

Cain, although having a great year is....

older than Hughes (24 vs. 22)
closer to arbitration (has 4 years experience vs. 2 years)
makes more money ($2.4 million this year)
has a GB/FB career ratio of 0.60 (meaning almost twice as many fly balls as ground balls - not exactly condusive to new Yankee Stadium).
Pitches in a pitchers park, in the National league
Has been extremely lucky this year (stranding 88.2% of his runners this year)

Aaron Rowand (age 31) .293, 30R, 6HR, 30RBI
Melky Cabrera (age 24) .286, 26R, 6HR, 27RBI

Now if you told me we were somehow getting Hanley Ramirez, well then I'd listen.
