This one’s on Girardi
by John BWhy the hell is Swisher bunting in the 9th inning when they were hitting Francisco?????? Can someone explain that to me? Just stupid overmanaging. Girardi stopped all the momentum and gift wrapped that game for the Rangers. Just plain stupid.
Girardi manages by the letter of the law. He has no “feel” for the game.
And another thing….if you’re going to limit Joba’s innings….just put him in the dang bullpen. Cy Young wouldn’t have command pitching every nine days. Another dumb move. While I have my issues with Joba, this isn’t his fault. Don’t throw him out there every nine days with no command to drain all his confidence.

I said the same thing as soon as I saw Swisher square. It killed the rally. I also added this… The guy is wild and Swisher is one of the best on the team at taking a walk. A walk there is even better than the bunt. I called my dad about this after the game to voice my frustration, and he was on Girardi’s side. I’m glad to see I’m not alone.
By the way. The loss is not solely on Girardi. Joba takes a lot of blame here. I don’t care about his extra rest.
I must say, my initial thought once they got it to 10-9 was bunt them over. There’s no one out and two guys on. But then I thought, wait a second, Francisco is a little wild here so maybe let Swisher work the count. After his showed bunt on the first pitch, and Francisco was way up in the zone. I would have taken the bunt off. But that’s me.
The bigger error was Hairston (who is in there b/c he is supposedly a pinch runner) getting doubled off. You have to know where the fielders are. Getting Doubled off with Jeter on deck is stupid.
Lastly, A-Rod needs to DH. He has absolutely no lateral movement AT ALL. I have been saying this for weeks. When something is hit to his right, he just watches it go by. That play that he didn’t even come close to on the third base line was a play that any MLB third baseman should make. Problem is Matsui is the DH and he (and his knees) can’t play the outfield, so Joba gets killed because his infield is porous.
