Winter of Discontent
by RussThis is an ok move. Am I excited about it? I don’t know is it that much different from the deal Matsui got (one year 6.5 million)? If the Red Sox were done making moves, I’d probably be ok with this. But the other day when I said I was ok with the moves that Boston made it was before they were contemplating obtaining Adrian Gonzalez. The more I think about it, the more we need, absolutely need Johnny Damon. Boston is shopping at Barney’s New York and we’re shopping at JC Penny. The proof is in the pudding I guess and we’ll see what happens after all is said and done. Pulling off a deal for Adrian Gonzalez will not be easy – Boston will have to part with Ellsbury and Buccholz as starters. There’s a new, young GM in San Diego and he can’t get that deal wrong.  Anyway, the thing that seemingly bothers me is the small market mentality that seems to have gotten into Cashman. I mean, who does he think he is? Brian McScrooge? Come on, Cash, where’s the Santa outfit? You know, “here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus Lane. Jump into bed and cover up your head because Santa Claus comes tonight.”  Look, last season Theo Epstein was biten by the same small market virus and tried to do things on the cheap and where did it get him? Nowhere. Remember taking flyers on Smoltz and the others?Â
Boston’s lineup: Pedroia 2B; Youkilis 3B; Martinez C; Gonzalez 1B; Ortiz DH; Drew RF; Cameron CF; Hermida LF; Scutaro SS.  ——  Beckett, Lackey, Lester, Dice-K, Wakefield (or one of the kids).
New York: Jeter SS; Johnson DH; Texieria 1B; Rodriguez 3B; Posada C; Granderson CF; Cano 2B; Swisher RF; Cabrera LF.  ———- Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, Chamberlain; Hughes.Â
It’s official. We stink. I’m conceding the division now.
