The latest Mets’ disaster
by RussHoly Cow they can screw anything up. The first thing that went through my mind was that Beltran was getting back at the Mets for not treating his injury right last season. There were rumors that Beltran was not happy with the Mets and now, he is being advised by Scott Boras to not do one single thing more than what is required. Therefore, no notification on the surgery… the player has the right – fine.  Here’s the other thing with yesterday’s press conference to say that they were basically annoyed with Beltran and the way he handled the situation. Beltran can do the following:
1) Rehab his knee and not play at all in 2010 – come back strong for 2011.Â
2) Rehab his knee and if he wanted to showcase that he was healthyat the end of 2010, fine and then request a trade in the off season.
3) Remember, Beltran is a 10/5 player. 10 years of service, five with the same club. He can demand a trade or become a free agent. Beltran is in the driver’s seat and now can get healthy on the Mets’ dime and what’s left of the contract.Â
Why the Mets would choose to publicly annoy Beltran is beyond me. He clearly did not trust the medical staff, the front office or ownership on any of this.  Why the Mets can’t handle this stuff behind closed doors is difficult for me to grasp.  The fact that Omar Minaya doesn’t handle the press conference tells me one of two things: 1) the Mets do not trust their own GM and he is not in charge; or 2) Omar was not “on board” with the way this was handled on a player he probably respects and admires. Either way, Omar’s tenure with the Mets is coming to an end.Â
Let’s see, they mishandled the Randolph dismissal, they didn’t treat Ryan Church’s concussion properly, they attack a member of the press (the whole Adam Rubin fiasco last season) and protect Tony Bernazzard when he’s probably caused most of the problems, they don’t know which way is up with Jose Reyes, and now their star centerfielder. And everyone wanted to know why it took Jason Bay so long to sign? Obviously second thoughts on his part – in the end he took the money. You can’t make it up.
