It’s the sum of the parts.
by Mike TPrediction: By June the centerfielder will be Brett Gardner and the LF will be Curtis Granderson. Winn is the 4th outfielder and is there to be the defensive substitution for Swisher.
I agree with Joe. If you look at the moves made by Cashman, you can’t look at them by position. You have to look at them as a whole and I agree that the comparisons are correct.
Since Granderson will be the LF compare him to Damon. Offense is probably the same. “Clutch” favors Damon. Power favors Granderson. Defense favors Granderson. Injury risk favors Granderson. Edge: Granderson.
Matsui/Johnson. Joe is right. Matsui has more Mash/clutch. Both are injury risks. Nick offers the ability to actually play the field occasionally. Edge: Matsui (by a couple of lengths based on “clutch” factor) But I do like Nick Johnson. Â
Gardner-Winn v. Melky – Defensively a huge upgrade. Gardner will be a stolen base threat not seen since the days of Ricky. Maybe less power, but Melky was fading.  Gardner has the potential to be a steal in terms of value.
No 4th Starter vs. Vazquez.  HUGE. The importance of this cannot be measured.Â
When you look at the above and realize that Cashman made all those things happen on the same salary he gave to Damon and Matsui combined, it is impressive.

Everything said is true. but sometimes numbers do not translate into on the field performance. the question is not will the replacements get the numbers of the departing player, but when will they acquire those numbers? will nick johnson hit papelbon with two outs in the ninth at fenway with 36,000 lunatic red sox fans screaming at him? will randy winn be able to steal a base off k rod after the yanks have dropped the first two games of the series? I guess the budget goes out the window in july when gardener is hitting .240 and winn is stuck in a 2 for 23 slump and Beltran has told the mets he wants to be traded.
